The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will conduct bye-elections on Saturday, June 20, 2026, to fill vacant seats in the Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly.
The elections became necessary following a series of deaths and political appointments that left several constituencies without representation.
The affected constituencies are Enugu North Senatorial District in Enugu State, Nasarawa North Senatorial District in Nasarawa State, Rivers South-East Senatorial District in Rivers State, Ondo South Senatorial District in Ondo State, Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency in Kano State, and Zuru State Constituency in Kebbi State.
The vacancy in Enugu North Senatorial District arose following the death of Senator Okey Ezea. In Nasarawa North, the seat became vacant after the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki, while Rivers South-East lost its representative following the death of Senator Barinada Mpigi.
In Ondo South, the vacancy was created after Senator Jimoh Ibrahim resigned his seat following his appointment as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
The Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency seat in Kano State became vacant following the death of House of Representatives member Muhammad Hassan.
Similarly, the Zuru State Constituency seat in Kebbi State became vacant after the death of the lawmaker representing the constituency in the State House of Assembly.
The Candidates
Enugu North Senatorial District
Three candidates are contesting the election in Enugu North Senatorial District. They are Ezeme Nestor Chika of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Asogwa Ikeje Israel of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Aneke Kingsley Chukwuebuka of the Boot Party (BP).
Ondo South Senatorial District
Four candidates are seeking to replace former Senator Jimoh Ibrahim. The contestants are Dr Francis Adedayo Faduyile of the APC, a former President of the Nigerian Medical Association; Adesanya Olaoluwa of the Action Peoples Party (APP); Akinwumi Adeolu Harrison of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM); and Nejo Funso Clement of the Boot Party (BP).
Nasarawa North Senatorial District
The candidates are former Minister of Information Labaran Maku of the Labour Party (LP), Emmanuel David Ombugadu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Halilu Danladi Envwulu-Aza of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and John Paul Araneshri of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Rivers South-East Senatorial District
Four candidates are in the race for the Rivers South-East Senatorial seat. They include Osarosaka Ebenezer Erewari of the APC, Nwogu Olaka Johnson of the PDP, Sam Kinanee Barikpoa of the Labour Party (LP), and Douglas Fabeeke Beeka of the Action Alliance (AA).
Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency, Kano State
Voters in Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency will elect a new member of the House of Representatives. The APC candidate is Rabiu Shuaibu, while the Labour Party is represented by Abubakar Yahaya Muhammad. Lawan Garba Haruna is contesting on the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
Zuru State Constituency, Kebbi State
In Kebbi State’s Zuru Constituency, Garba Aiki Rabiu of the APC will face Aliyu Galadima Muhammad of the Labour Party in the race for a seat in the State House of Assembly.
