In a letter addressed to Mr. Sulemana Braimah, the Executive Director of MFWA, PAMED recalled the role of the deceased as a champion of press freedom by collaborating with the coalition to get justice on press freedom issues to achieve independent journalism and inspire future generations of media professionals and activists across the region.
The letter reads, “It is with deep sorrow that the Partnership for Media and Democracy (PAMED), comprising Nigerian media freedom and freedom of expression organisations – the Centre for Media and Society (CEMESO), Media Rights Agenda (MRA) and International Press Centre (IPC) – joins the Media Foundation for West Africa to mourn the untimely passing of your esteemed colleague, Muheeb Saeed.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire team at the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) during this difficult time.
“Muheeb’s unwavering dedication to press freedom, freedom of expression, and the safety of journalists in West Africa was truly commendable. His contributions to the struggle for independent journalism will also remain an enduring legacy, inspiring future generations of media professionals and activists across the region.
“We recall Muheeb’s constant collaboration with us on press freedom issues, particularly his resolute commitment to ensuring that justice was done for the late Pelumi Onifade, a student journalist who was killed during the 2020 #EndSars protests in Nigeria.
“We understand that his loss leaves a profound void, not only within MFWA but in the broader media advocacy community in the region and the African continent. We therefore stand in solidarity with you and pray that his family in particular would find strength and comfort in the impact he made and the lives he touched.
“We also commiserate with you on the recent passing of your father. Please accept our deepest condolences. Our thoughts are with you and your family at this time too. May the soul of the departed rest in perfect peace.”
