Claim: Video alleges that Olusegun Obasanjo arrived at a prison in Sokoto to visit Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Verdict: False
Full Text
A widely shared video alleges that former President Obasanjo visited the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), an organisation advocating for the secession of the South-East region, as well as parts of the South-South, from Nigeria to establish an independent state known as Biafra.
The clips show Obasanjo walking with a large entourage escorting him, wearing white native attire and welcomed by assumed Nigerian Correctional Service officers.
In November 2025, a Federal High Court in Abuja convicted Kanu on seven counts, including terrorism, treasonable felony, and inciting violence via his broadcasts on Radio Biafra.

However, given the sensitive political and ethnic implications surrounding both figures, the claim raised concerns and warranted verification.
Many of these videos aim to provoke ethnic feelings or political instability by suggesting that a former leader of a major nation is either supporting a group or challenging the current government.
Why This Claim Matters
NDRFactCheck notes that such content is frequently shared to stir ethnic tension, shape political narratives, or mislead the public about a former president visiting a detained separatist leader. These videos often distort perceptions and spread misinformation.
Verification
Firstly, we carried out a Google reverse image search on the screenshot part of the video. The Google tool was able to retrieve the original video of the former president stepping out of a car in native attire for his 88th birthday celebration, as posted by Ovationmediagroup.
In another part of the clip, we found the original video was an interview he granted on a podcast by legacyseriesofficial on YouTube, where he was discussing his early life and his “accidental” entry into the Nigerian military.
NDRFactcheck used the AI video and voice detector ISFAKEA. It was revealed that the video was generated by artificial intelligence, which scored it 38%.
In a more simplified analysis, the SECOND FRAME gives more detailed information about the video, which shows that 68% of the video is real while 38% is AI-generated. However, the audio was flagged to be 99.1% AI-generated.
It is worth noting that the former President Olusegun Obasanjo has once denied discussing the release of Nnamdi Kanu. Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has generally distanced himself from direct involvement in the case of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, denying discussions on his release during meetings with South East governors.
Conclusion
Multiple checks confirm the viral video alleging that Olusegun Obasanjo visited Nnamdi Kanu in prison is false. The video is a misleading fabrication aimed at creating a false narrative and provoking political or ethnic tension.
