Security personnel, particularly police officers, are highly visible across Osun as the governorship election approaches. A day before the poll, the Nigerian Police are intensifying final preparations by deploying thousands of officers across the state’s 30 local government areas to help ensure a peaceful and credible election.
Over 15,000 police operatives and 30 Commissioners of Police (CPs) have been actively deployed across the state’s 30 Local Government Areas. A Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) is coordinating all security activities on the ground.
The Nigeria Police Force has announced strict security measures for the Osun State governorship election on Saturday, August 15, 2026, warning against violence, thuggery, vote buying, and ballot snatching.
Police personnel will be assisted by 10,000 additional officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, as well as operatives from the Correctional Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, and Nigeria Immigration Service.
Police personnel are very visible in Osogbo, the state capital. Police sources and official statements indicate that a minimum of four officers will be assigned to each of the 3,673 polling units.
Two heavy units of the Mobile Police Force (PMF) are strictly guarding the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) state headquarters in Osogbo.
The Nigerian Police deployed its officers and men from neighbouring states for the election.
The police have strictly barred Amotekun, hunters, the Joint Civilian Task Force (CJTF), and neighbourhood watch groups from participating in election security duties.
These prohibited outfits are completely banned from escorting electoral materials, guarding polling booths, or carrying any weapons during the election cycle, especially on voting day.
The Accord Party has repeatedly criticised police conduct during the pre-election period, alleging partisanship and calling for the removal of Commissioner of Police Gothan.
Violence has increased in Osun State during the election campaign, with reports of scores killed over their political involvement. Police, however, attributed some incidents to clashes between rival cult groups.
