CLAIM: Video shows protesters seeking the release of Nnamdi Kanu

VERDICT: False. The video is AI-generated.

FULL STORY

Barely 48 hours after being sentenced to life imprisonment, on the 22nd of November 2025, X user @kizyuzoma posted a 10-second video of purported protesters calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu.

Attached to the video is the caption, “Justice for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Nigerian government must free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu now.

#FreeNnamdiKanuNow”

In the video, human figures, which include black and white people, could be seen with a few of them holding the Biafran flag and placards with inscriptions that read, “Free Nnamdi Kanu”, “Justice for Kanu”. A male voice can also be heard in the background leading the chant, “Free Nnamdi Kanu now, justice for Nnamdi”.

On November 20, 2025, the court, through Justice Omotoso, pronounced Nnamdi Kanu’s sentence to life imprisonment, after he had been convicted of 7 count charges, which include terrorism, violent secessionist campaigns, among others.

Justice Omotosho observed that Mr Kanu identified himself as a freedom fighter. However, by imposing an illegal stay-at-home order, assuming presidential powers, and making inflammatory online broadcasts, he caused deaths and destruction among the people of the South-east—those he claimed to represent.

Since its upload of the video, the post has gathered more than 186,000 views, 5000 likes and almost 2500 reposts.

NDRFactCheck found this claim to be untrue.  A closer observation of the video shows that the text inscriptions on the placards do not align. One of the placards reads “Justice Nnn Nnamdi for Kanu”. Another observation is that the human figures in the video did not at any point make mouth movements, but the video shows that they were responding to the chants by the male lead voice.

The video carries a ‘Sora’ watermark, which shows that it was obtained from the app.

Created by OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, Sora allows users to turn written prompts into realistic AI-generated videos in seconds. The model generates short video clips based on prompts from text descriptions and photos, and can also extend existing short videos.

CONCLUSION

The trending video is not from any Free Nnamdi Kanu protest. It was generated using Sora AI, a model that transforms texts into videos.
