More troubles have been piled on the travails of suspended CBN governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, still in the custody of the Department of State Services, as President Bola Tinubu on Sunday appointed Mr. Jim Osayande Obazee as a special investigator to investigate the activities of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other related entities.
In a letter to Mr. Jim Obazee, the Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), the president cited Section 15(5) of the Nigerian Constitution to reiterate his commitment to fighting corruption in his government and to add that the head of the FRCN is required to directly report to him.
President Tinubu also demanded that Mr. Osayande take immediate action by investigating key government business entities and leakages in the Central Bank of Nigeria, as well as reporting the siphoned public funds by some individuals and public establishments.
Weaponizing the special investigator, the President also directed him to assemble a team of suitable experience and capability, as well as to coordinate with relevant security and anti-corruption agencies, to carry out the assignment, and to report to him weekly.
Additionally, Mr. Godwin Emefiele’s suspension as the head of the apex bank was disclosed to Mr. Obazee in the letter.
The letter reads: “In accordance with the fundamental objective set forth in Section 15(5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), this administration is today, continuing the fight against corruption by appointing you as a Special Investigator, to investigate the CBN and Related Entities. This appointment shall be with immediate effect and you are to report directly to my office.
“The full terms of your engagement as Special Investigator shall be communicated to you in due course but, require that you immediately take steps to ensure the strengthening and probity of key Government Business Entities (GBEs), further block leakages in CBN and related GBEs and provide a comprehensive report on public wealth currently in the hands of corrupt individuals and establishments (whether private or public).
“You are to investigate the CBN and related entities using a suitably experienced, competent, and capable team and work with relevant security and anti-corruption agencies to deliver on this assignment. I shall expect a weekly briefing on the progress being made.” President Tinubu
Mr Emefiele, whose controversial Naira Swap policy caused a lot of pain and hardship for Nigerians, was suspended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on June 9th, before being arrested the next day by the Department of Secret Services in Lagos.
After spending 46 days in DSS custody, the suspended CBN governor was charged in court on the 25th on the innocuous charge of illegal possession of firearms, and the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos granted him bail.
Shortly after his bail, the DSS invaded the court premises to re-arrest him, despite the court’s ruling that Mr Emefiele should be kept in prison custody pending the completion of his bail conditions, resulting in an altercation between prison officials and secret service operatives.
Despite the drama, the DSS issued a statement after re-arresting Emefiele in court, exonerating itself of any wrongdoing and claiming that it only operated within the confines of the law.
While the suspended CBN governor remains in DSS custody, the latest development casts further doubt on whether he will be released from the web of the secret services anytime soon.
