As the 2027 general elections approach, manipulated newspaper front pages targeting prominent political figures are increasingly circulating on social media.
Bad actors are using artificial intelligence (AI) to manipulate narratives and spread disinformation.
These fabricated front pages mimic the nameplates, logos, layouts, and overall design of reputable newspapers such as Nigerian Tribune and Punch. They spread false, sensational, or implausible claims about political candidates to mislead readers and shape public opinion.
This trend shows that disinformation is evolving in new ways.
A viral image, purportedly from an unidentified newspaper called Daily News, claims that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar “promised to provide every Nigerian with a bag of rice weekly if elected president.” See examples here, here, and here.
An AI-generated newspaper called The Daily Tribune also falsely claimed that Atiku Abubakar would grant “side chicks” the same rights as legal wives.
On another generative newspaper front page, it said that “it was a mistake he sold ALSCON built with $3.5B for $120M”
We found that the misinformation extended beyond one political figure. Another fabricated claim attributed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stated that “All students who failed to repay their loans after graduation will go to jail for life imprisonment”
