Birthing Media Renewal, the WAJIC Perspective by Dapo Olorunyomi

In his welcome remark at WAJIC, Mr. Dapo Olorunyomi “welcome participants from the diverse corners of the world and West Africa. Particular gratitude to keynote speaker Richard Gingras, the Global VP for Google, and Nataliya Gunmenyuk our colleague from Ukraine.

“Our historical duty today is to reinvent journalism to better serve the purpose of our democracy and the liberty of citizens. Sadly, journalism is in a troubled state in our region at this moment. Its business model is in crisis, our audience lack trust in us, and professional standards are flagging.

“This is perfect ground for innovation on how we produce content, how we distribute the contents and above all how we finance our journalism. These questions compel the hosting of WAJIC.

“Innovation is a pathway to the challenges of renewal we seek and if we will ever make west Africa a space and zone of good governance, tolerance and livable our journalism must wake up to the test of effective response to realities of fragile states, epidemic of corruption, information and climate crises, complexities of technology and the absence of sub national mechanisms of accountability like professional media at state and local council levels.

“Let’s make this happen colleagues and hope that WAJIC offers the template to the destination we are imagining”.
