A viral claim states that the Oyo State government received a sum of 50 billion Naira from President Bola Tinubu to serve as intervention funds to support the state government following the 2024 Ibadan explosion.

Ayodele Fayose, former governor of Ekiti State, stated during an interview with TVC on Friday, 26 December 2025, that Governor Makinde failed to disclose N50 billion in support received from the presidency.

Fayose additionally asserted that the N50 billion was not directly deposited into the Oyo State treasury but was instead a subject of discussion during a meeting referenced by Governor Seyi Makinde in his media interaction.

His words: “You did not tell Nigerians you got, at the prerogative, at the mercy of Mr President, N50 billion in support of the explosion in Ibadan. He never said that to Nigeria. So, the president can say the explosion is not worth more than N10 billion.”

On the 16th of January 2024, an explosion rocked Deji Oyelese Street of Bodija, Ibadan, Oyo State, with its tremor spreading beyond the street and affecting properties, lives, and businesses outside the street. According to media reports, the explosion, which claimed seven lives and injured seventy-seven people, was caused by illegal miners who stored explosive devices in one of the buildings in the Bodija area.

The Oyo State government on Thursday, 5th of June 2025, disbursed the payment of 4.8bn to the victims of the explosion. The President of the Bodija Estate Residents Association (BERA), Muyiwa Bamgbose, said, “The State Government, through the Relief Fund Management and Disbursement Committee led by the Deputy Governor, approved a total support package of N4.08 billion.

“This followed extensive assessments by professional bodies, which identified 318 buildings within the 500m blast radius. The committee also recommended financial compensation to families that suffered fatalities, five registered tenants (102 beneficiaries), and owners of 37 damaged vehicles.”

Reacting to the claim made by Fayose, the Special Adviser on Media to Makinde, Dr Sulaimon Olarenwaju, described the allegation as baseless and challenged Fayose to provide evidence to support it.

On Monday, 29th December 2025, Fayose released a document which he claims is evidence that the Oyo State government truly received the 50-billion-naira fund. This has raised doubts and speculation; hence, NDRFactCheck was prompted to verify the claim.

The document in circulation, dated 19th August 2024, was addressed to the office of the Accountant General/Minister of Finance of the country. The document titled “Re: Request for Special Intervention Fund” shows that the Oyo State government requested the sum of N50 billion with the purpose of “intervention funding support for the reconstruction of Old Bodija and Environs after Bodija Explosion”. However, according to the document, the money requested is N50 billion, as can be seen in the heading “amount requested”, and no part of it explicitly states that the same sum was disbursed to the Oyo State government.

The document in circulation was released by Ayo Fayose

While the Oyo Governor’s aide has publicly claimed that only N30 billion was received, he didn’t provide any documents to prove his claim.

CONCLUSION

The document confirms that the Oyo State governor requested N50 billion from the presidency, but does not prove that the funds were actually disbursed. Therefore, it is not sufficient evidence to support claims that Governor Makinde received a N50 billion intervention fund.
