Fact Check: Old Photo of Rotimi Amaechi with Tinubu Resurfaces as New Meeting

Claim: Pictures of Rotimi Amaechi in a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Verdict: Misleading

Full Text: Photos claiming to show Rotimi Amaechi in a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have been circulating.

The picture was posted by an X user @Uno_009  on 11th June, 2026, claiming that President Tinubu is having a meeting with Rotimi Amaechi.

He also attached pictures to his quoted tweet “BREAKING: Rotimi Amaechi is reportedly set to resign from the ADC following a closed-door meeting with Tinubu earlier today.”

Rotimi Amaechi was the former governor of Rivers State, a minister of transportation under the administration of the late Muhammadu Buhari, and a former member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In 2025, Amaechi announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), stressing that Nigeria is in a state of total collapse and urgently needs a complete overhaul.

Therefore, joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is one of the top politicians in the ADC coalition. He contested the presidential primary election in the ADC and lost to Atiku Abubakar.

However, the claim may have seemed plausible because politicians often switch parties after falling out of favour in their own.

Reactions emanated from this tweet, with some believing the post to be untrue here, here, and here, while some believe it to be true here, here, and here. It generated 23 comments, 37 retweets, 77 likes, and 7.9k views within a short time.

NDRFactcheck, therefore, decided to investigate the veracity of the claim.

Verification 

A reverse image search was carried out; it was found that the picture was from a meeting in 2022 in a visit embarked on by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, where he met with five presidential aspirants in Abuja in a bid to reconcile aggrieved members after the presidential primary election to make the party stronger, including Rotimi Amaechi while he was still in the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Also, in another publication by Naijanews (2022), the picture was used as the headline for a report attributed to Rotimi Amaechi meeting Tinubu after the party presidential primary.

The claim that President Tinubu recently held a meeting with Mr Rotimi Amaechi is not true but was used to create political confusion and is therefore misleading.
