On the 4th of April, 2026, an X user, @ejykmykel1, posted a video attached to it as a comment, claiming that the former Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman Professor Attahiru Jega had told the commission to de-recognise the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by Senator David Mark.
The tweet quoted “Former INEC Chairman Prof Mahmud Jega, speaking on the issue of INEC on de-recognising ADC led by Sen. David Mark.”
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), through its National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, had announced the deletion of the names of Senator David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola as National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively, of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The video has since garnered 46 comments, 213 retweets, 442 likes and 31k views, and other users have come out to say the post is wrongly attributed to a former INEC official here, here, here and here, among others.
Given Nigeria’s political environment and the furore that the issue of INEC’s deregulation had generated in the polity, such claims could heighten tension and further undermine public trust in democratic institutions, such as the INEC.
The NDRFactcheck decided to investigate this claim because it involves the comments of a high-profile figure whose views could count on this sensitive political issue, which can easily mislead the public and influence political perception.
Verification
We took a screenshot of the video in different parts to conduct a Google reverse image search. Our findings revealed that the speaker is ARISE TV public affairs analyst Mahmud Jega.
Further investigation found that Mahmud Jega, not Attahiru Jega, was the one speaking; he is a journalist, a columnist and chairman of the Editorial Board of Daily Trust and the current author of 21st Century Chronicles.
Conclusion
The claim that Professor Attahiru Jega commented on INEC de-recognising ADC is misleading, as there is no credible evidence supporting it.
