The Nigeria Senate on Wednesday, during its plenary session confirmed the appointment of seven ministerial nominees appointed by President Bola Tinubu after screening them in a friendly atmosphere.

Their confirmation was announced by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio after the lawmakers cleared the nominees who were asked questions related to their respective portfolios. They will consequently be sworn in by the President as Ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The confirmed ministers and their portfolios are as follows: Nentawe Yilwatda, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction; Muhammadu Dingyadi, Minister of Labour and Employment; and Bianca Odumegu-Ojukwu, Minister of State Foreign Affairs; Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment; Idi Maiha, Minister of Livestock Development; Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, Minister of State, Housing and Urban Development; and Suwaiba Ahmad, Minister of State Education.

Last Wednesday, after the Federal Executive Council meeting, the presidency announced the immediate implementation of the far-reaching changes to reinvigorate the administration’s capacity for optimal efficiency. This development involved the merging of some ministries to create new ones.

The president also dismissed five ministers, namely Uju-Ken Ohanenye as Minister of Women Affairs; Lola Ade-John as Minister of Tourism; Tahir Mamman as Minister of Education; Abdullahi Gwarzo as Minister of State, Housing and Urban Development; and Jamila Ibrahim as Minister of Youth Development.

With the appointment of seven new ministers, the President also swapped ten of the ministers by reassigning their portfolios. On Thursday, the president wrote to the red chamber, requesting the screening and confirmation of the newly appointed ministers for their respective portfolios.

The president’s letter was presented and read by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio who asked the concerned committee to consider the request.

On Wednesday, the confirmed ministers were screened by the lawmakers in their chambers. The screening exercise began around noon and ended later in the day. The exercise which was slated for Tuesday was postponed to Wednesday for the nominees to put all their papers together.

Before the screening exercise, the Senate suspended its rule to admit the special adviser to the President of the Senate affairs, Basheer Lado, based on the motion moved by the leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, at 12:57 pm.

During the screening exercise, the ministerial nominees were drilled with questions based on the designated portfolios and how they intend to execute their duties. Having satisfied the senators, their appointments were subsequently confirmed.

The screening was not as tedious as the previous exercise as some of the Ministers were asked friendly questions after which they were asked to take a bow and leave the chamber.
