Less than 24 hours before the governorship election polls open, there has been a massive movement of materials, people and money across Osun state. While INEC has moving both sensitive and non-sensitive materials, the politicians have been moving money across the state to mobilise voters to the polling units tomorrow.
The INEC starting from midnight has been mobilizing its personnel, dispatching them to their duty posts with election materials ahead of the election of tomorrow. The politician on the other hand are engaging on last minutes strategy to win the election. The political parties are mobilizing their agents and canvassers with huge sums of money ahead of the polls.
The has been a temporary upsurge in economic activities in the state and many places of recreation are packed full with customers trying to relax and enjoy themselves ahead of tomorrow’s restriction of movement which holds from 7:00 AM. The state has been agog with pomp and pageantry.
The various INEC offices in Osogbo and across the local government areas have been a beehive of activities since early morning Friday with electoral Officers and especially Youth Corp members and ad-hoc staff trying to get directives on their location for conduct of election tomorrow.
It is estimated that over N3 billion may have been moved across the state in the last 48 hours. The politicians may have changed tactics from “see and buy” and may entice voters with good sums of money before getting to the polling station.The APC and the PDP appear to be the biggest spenders in this election.
Though Friday was not declared a work free day, most banks, however, shut there doors to customers by mid-day thereby,leaving many persons stranded.
The politicians have also, been trying to outsmart one another by sending unauthenticated news stories about themselves on different social medium platforms. Such stories insinuate that one candidate has stepped down for the other. They are also dropping the names of some national figures as having brokered alliance among the candidates.
There are 48 candidates contesting this election. The list of the candidates and their qualifications have earlier been published by INEC. The front runners amongst the candidates are Alhadji Gboyega Oyetola of the ruling APC, Senator Ademola Adeleke of the PDP, Senator Iyiola Omisore of the SDP, Alhadji Moshood Adeoti of the ADP and Alhadji Fatai Akinbade of the ADC.
By the evening there was massive movement of security personnel especially soldiers across the state, making residents to retire home early. Some even speculated that there was curfew in the state but security sources denied such speculation, affirming instead that restriction of movement becomes effective 12:00 midnight.
All eyes are on the innovation by INEC in the design of the polling unist in such a way to prevent vote buying and selling. The INEC had earlier banned the use of mobile phones and cameras in the polling booth.
