Voting in the Osun governorship election has officially closed but the process was not as perfect as anticipated in the beginning though it was largely peaceful and orderly.

The incident of vote buying still persisted in a modified form which does not make it as brazen as witnessed in previous election. The political parties have evolved a new strategy where the agents canvass the voter to vote for a political party and having obliged, he/she is directed through a liaison to the party representative in charge of money not too far away from the polling centre for immediate settlement. Some party agents were caught in the process and handed over to the police.

The candidate of the ADC, Alhadji Fatai Akinbade confirmed witnessing vote buying in his ward. “I saw some persons going to behind a mosque to collect money after voting and when I alerted the security agencies, they simply changed their location”

The problem of ballot snatching also reared its ugly head in a couple of centers. Two of such cases were reported in ward 8 of Orolu local government, where ballot boxes were snatched in units 3 & 4. The cases were reported immediately and the culprits were apprehended and ballot boxes retrieved. It could not be ascertained as at press time if the contents of the ballot boxes have been compromised or not.

The opposition parties also alleged that INEC had created some illegal polling units known only to the ruling party. The veracity of such claims are, however, to be tested at the collation centres, where election results are not being expected beyond the 3010 voting centres and 755 voting points.

In a few hours’ time results would start trickling in from the polling units to the wards, then to the Local government areas. On the whole, it has been a successful election all over the state with none of the major candidates expressing serious objection to the conduct up till the end of voting. It is yet to be seen if this spirit would be sustained for the remaining stages of the election.
