The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) early Wednesday morning concluded its collation of presidential election results from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory and after adding up its figures declared Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, winner of Nigeria’s most competitive election in decades and pronounced him the President-Elect.

Senator Tinubu polled the highest votes of 8,794,726 votes, defeating 17 other candidates. He won clearly in twelve states and had 25 percent spread across 30 states of the federation. The constitution requires a winner to score the highest number of votes and to have at least 25 percent spread in at least 24 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

In declaring Senator Tinubu the winner, Prof Mahmood Yakubu who was the returning Officer for the presidential election was, however, silent on the contentious issue of a winner scoring 25 percent of the votes in the Federal Capital Territory. He simply said Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, having fulfilled the constitutional requirements is hereby declared winner

He said the certificates of return for the president-elect and that of the vice president-elect will be presented to the winners at 3;00pm at the national collation center, Abuja.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, polled 6,984,520 votes to come second, winning in twelve states of the federation while Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party came third in the election.

Peter Obi of the Labour Party came third with a total of 6,101,533 votes winning in twelve states, while Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of the NNPP came fourth with 1,496,687 votes winning in only one state.

Senator Bola Tinubu won the election in Rivers, Borno, Jigawa, Zamfara, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Ekiti, Ondo, Oyo and Ogun states.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar won in Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, Gombe, Yobe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Osun, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa states.

Mr Peter Obi won in Edo, Cross River, Delta, Lagos, FCT, Plateau, Imo, Ebonyi, Nasarawa, Anambra, Abia and Enugu states.

Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso won in Kano state.
