A Twitter user Akinto tweeted on 11 July, 2023, claiming that Tinubu has just appointed 20 Yoruba aides in his new government.
The tweet has so far generated 187 views, 1,911 retweets, 46 quotes and 5,663 likes. Tweets of this nature are common especially when they focus on government policies and programmes. At a time when social media space has been turned to a tool used to spread unfounded claims, it is important that the veracity of such claim is checked.
Having been sworn in on May 29, 2023, Mr. Tinubu made a series of appointments including the State House Protocol Officer, Chief of Staff to the president, and the Secretary to the governemnt of the federation.
The President, on 6th June 2023, wrote to the Senate, seeking the approval to appoint 20 advisers to run his administration. Some weeks after, the president announced the appointment of 20 aides.
But did Tinubu truly appoint 20 Yoruba aides as claimed? We verified.
Verification:
To verify the claim, we sought to know how many times President Tinubu has publicly declared the appointment of his aides since he was sworn in as the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in May 29th, 2023. Following some checks in a couple of credible news platforms, results showed the following:
On May 29, 2023, President Bola Tinubu made his first appointment when he announced Victor Adeleke as State Chief of .Protocol Officer (SCOP).
On June 2, 2023, Mr. Tinubu made another announcement, confirming the appointment of the Chief of Staff to the President, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila and the Secretary to the government of the federation, Senator George Akume among others.
On June 15th 2023, President Tinubu announced the appointment of another eight individuals as special advisers, with Mr. Dele Alake as Special Adviser, Special Duties, Communications and Strategy, Mr. Wale Edun; Special Adviser, Monetary Policies.
On July 11, the president made a new set of appointment, announcing the confirmation of twenty aides as Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) and Special Assistants (SAs).
These include Tunde Rahman, (Media); Abdulaziz Abdulaziz (SSA Print Media); and Ibrahim Masari (SSA Political). Others are Adekunle Tinubu – Personal Physician; Damilotun Aderemi – SSA (Private Secretary);
Toyin Subair – SSA (Domestic); O’tega Ogra – SSA (Digital/New Media); Demola Oshodi – Senior SSA(Protocol); Tope Ajayi – SSA(Media & Public Affairs); Yetunde Sekoni – SSA; Motunrayo Jinadu – SSA; Segun Dada – SpeSSA (Social Media); and Paul Adekanye – SA(Logistics).
Friday Soton – SA (Housekeeping); Shitta-Bey Akande – SA (Catering); Nosa Asemota – SA (Visual Communication) Personal Photographer. Kamal Yusuf – PA (Special Duties); Wale Fadairo – PA (General Duties); Sunday Moses – PA (Videography); and Taiwo Okanlawon – PA (State Photographer).
From the foregoing, findings show that at least 5 of these aides are none Yoruba or from outside the Southwestern Nigeria. This means, 15 and not 20 newly appointed presidential aides are Yoruba.
Conclusion:
Findings from credible news platforms show that not all the official aides of President Tinubu are Yoruba.
