Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu on Monday explained the relative lack of tension at the electoral body to precision planning and tactical preparation stressing that “we are good to go.”

He also disclosed that the Commission would commence training of ad hoc staff for the general elections on the 9th of February,2023.

Prof. Yakubu disclosed this when the President and CEO of International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), Mr. Anthony N. Banbury and Board members of IFEST visited him in his office in Abuja.

“Preparations have gone very well, reason why there are no tension around here”, he explained to the visitors adding that INEC had successfully executed 12 out of the 14 activities on its schedule for the 2023 general elections.

The remaining two items , according to him are ‘end of campaign’ and ‘ election day proper’.

He said the Commission would be meeting with the transport unions to perfect logistics issues on Tuesday.
Prof. Yakubu reiterated the commitment of the INEC team to conduct a free, fair and credible elections.

He commended IFES for appointing his predecessor, Prof. Attahiru Jega on the board of IFES hoping “the cooperation will continue and wax stronger”, stressing that the partnership between IFES and INEC is amazing.

In his address, Mr. Banbury said IFES is at the INEC headquarters to formally declare IFES support to INEC in achieving the responsibility of conducting credible elections in the country.

“We are here to pay our respect , commend you and offer partnership. We are also here to learn how IFES can contribute to what you are doing a d to support you in the February 25 and March 11 elections.

Mr. Banbury used the ocassion to introduce Prof. Jega who has joined the Board of IFES. The former INEC boss was at the INEC office for the first time after the 2015 general elections.
