Despite not lifting the trophy at the final of the just concluded AFCON 2023 tournament in Ivory Coast, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday showed the nation’s gratitude to all the players and their officials for clinching second position by showering gifts on them.

The President conferred on members of the Super Eagles team, national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), a flat each and a plot of land in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for their impressive display at the just concluded AFCON 2023 tournament.

The Super Eagles were received at the State House, Presidential Villa, Abuja on Tuesday by the President and other top government officials. All the team members and officials were in attendance.

These gestures follow a similar one by the federal government in 1994 when members of the Super Eagles were allocated houses for winning the African Cup of Nations in Tunis, Tunisia, in 1994, but the gifts were long in coming. The promise was made by the then military head of state General Sani Abacha.

But the Federal Government finally fulfilled the promise of allocating houses to the victorious 1994 Super Eagles Team after 28 years during the regime of President Muhammad Buhari as the then Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), in a ceremony, handed over the Certificate of Occupancy (CoO) of three bedrooms houses to each team member in Abuja.

The Federal Government had on 7 March, 2023 said it was going to fulfill its promise to the team when it delivered 76 housing units to the Nasarawa State government.

Mr Fashola said it was an opportunity to remember the country’s heroes, the valiant Super Eagles to whom the country made a promise of providing houses for winning the 1994 African Cup of Nations, which had remained unfulfilled.

“We arrange with members who were beneficiaries to choose where they will be allocated and we anticipated that it is possible we give you allocation letters.

“We decided that we will be handing over at the commissioning site so that there are no more gaps to fill. We promised this and we will want to make sure that it does not delay any further.

“So you heard that Emanuel Amuneke and others have been given their own during the commissioning and so now this is what we are planning for you. Some of you were absent during the commissioning”, Mr. Fashola said.

It is yet to be seen how fast the Tinubu administration would deliver on these offers to the Super Eagles. However, the regime was able to pay members of the Super Eagles all their allowances during the competition. It also settled backlogs of money owed the Nigeria Football Federation and the Super Eagles previously,
