As part of the International Press Centre’s (IPC) activities for female politicians within the EU-SDGN Project, Olushola Vivian participated in the two-day Strategic Communications and Media Engagement Workshop held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on December 9–10, 2019.
The comprehensive training enhanced her insight into the significant contributions women make to the development of Nigeria’s political landscape.
With the support of EU/IPC, she developed strong communication skills, excelling in public speaking, media engagement, and effective use of social media. She also became adept at managing complex political relationships and participating in public discourse. Her experience underscores the importance of education, perseverance, and a commitment to advancing women’s representation in leadership roles.
Olushola Vivian is a member of the APC who participated in elections for the chairmanship position. Although she did not obtain the primary ticket, she remains involved in the political process.
In 2019, she was selected as the NCP party candidate for the House of Assembly in Badagry Constituency 1, but did not win the election.
Her bid for the Olorunda LCDA, Badagry chairmanship in Lagos State was also unsuccessful. Still, she persists.
In a region where awareness of women’s political leadership is gradually increasing, Olushola decided to withdraw in favour of a more prominent candidate. Her decision was acknowledged with an appointment as Principal of a vocational training centre in Olorunda. While this position marks a new phase in her career, she approaches it with professionalism and dedication.
Olushola asserts that meaningful political transformation originates at the grassroots level. She encourages IPC and similar organisations to broaden their support to include women participating in local government elections, rather than focusing exclusively on national contests. Her advocacy serves as both a call to action and her participation represents a symbol of optimism.
Although Olushola Vivian hasn’t won a ticket yet, her story and determination are inspiring others and emboldening more women.
