Dateline September 22, 2018: About 1.2 million registered residents of Osun state, who collected their Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) early this morning trooped out to different polling units to cast their vote and elect a new governor after an exhaustive and tension soaked campaign period.
Voting opened at 8:00 AM this morning and will close at 2:00 PM. Restriction on movement which came into effect at midnight on Friday would be called off at 4:00 PM on Saturday.
There has been no significant changes to the architecture in many of the polling units contrary to expectation that the INEC would come up with new designs. Ballot boxes are visible to all agents though the voting cubicles are a bit far off. The voters are orderly and the presence of security in all the polling units is very commendable.
Voters were made to drop their mobile telephone sets and other recording devices after collecting their ballot papers. Several persons handed their telephone sets to other persons on the queue before approaching the Electoral Officers.
Over 200 election observers are watching have been accredited for this election. The election would hold in 3010 voting units and 755 voting points. There are 332 wards spread across the 30 Local Governments and one Area Office.
There is no sign of vote buying and selling activities within the vicinity of the polling units visited in Ilesa West Local Government.
There are 48 candidates contesting in this election which many opined would be a referendum on the 8 years administration of Governor Raufu Aregbesola. If the candidate of the ruling APC wins, it would mean that majority of Osun residents are satisfied with the ruling party’s administration.
