Labour Party’s Peter Obi, Upsets the Apple-Cart, Floors Tinubu in Lagos

The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party and Peter Obi have upset the apple-cart in Lagos by defeating defeating the All Progressives Congress and its presidential candidate Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, in the 2023 presidential election, a feat hitherto unimaginable. The Bola Tinubu political machinery has held sway in Lagos since the return to democratic rule in 1999.

According to the total results announced by the Lagos Results Collation Officer, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Professor Adenike Temidayo Oladiji, Peter Obi polled 582,454 votes to defeat his closest rival Tinubu, who polled 572,606 while the PDP and Atiku Abubakar came a distant third polling 75,750 votes.

Bola Tinubu, who is a former governor of Lagos suffered a historical loss by losing in the state for the first time in decades. But he won in eleven local governments out of twenty in the states, namely Epe, Lagos Mainland, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos Island, Agege, Badagry, Apapa, Ikorodu, Ifako-Ijaiye, Surulere and Mushin.

Peter Obi on the other hand carved his victory from nine local governments in Lagos including Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Alimosho, Amuwo-Odofin, Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Kosofe, Ojo, Oshodi-Isolo and Somolu.

Speaking with the journalists at the Lagos state collation centre, the state chairman of the Labour Party, Pastor Dayo Ekong expressed her delight in the results which led the victory of her party. She however stated that the Labour Party will contend the results from where there was violence and disenfranchisement.

Also, Tunji Shelle, the representative of the Peoples Democratic Party decried the discrepancies in the electioneering process. He pointed at the thuggery, political violence and voting manipulation as major setbacks for the integrity of the elections in Lagos state.

Reacting to the results, the representative of the APC, Fuad Oki pointed at the low voters turnout as reason for the results. He also blamed the Naira scarcity. “When a child falls, he looks at the front, but when an adult falls, he looks at the back, we will review the the process, he said after conceding to the results.
