The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced on Friday that it has launched a nationwide road show in Abuja to inform Nigerians about the start of the 2025 Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).
The road show, launched from the Commission’s headquarters, is part of INEC’s effort to boost voter education, reduce voter apathy, and promote inclusive participation in Nigeria’s elections.
Representing the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, National Commissioner, Barr. May Agbamuche Mbu emphasised that voter registration serves as the cornerstone of credible elections.
“We urge Nigerians who have attained voting age, those wishing to transfer their registration, or those needing replacements for lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), to seize this opportunity. Voter registration is not just a civic duty; it is the gateway to participating in the governance of our country,” she said.
The sensitisation exercise was attended by several senior officials, including National Commissioner Professor Kunle Ajayi, mni; Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mrs. Victoria Eta-Messi; Deputy Director of Information and Publicity, Mr. Wilfred Ifogal; Deputy Director of Voter Education, Mrs. Paula Iwenjiora; and Deputy Director of the Gender and Inclusivity Department, Mrs. Perpetual Aligwara.
INEC’s online pre-registration began on Monday, 18th August 2025, via the portal cvr.inecnigeria.org, while in-person registration will commence on Monday, 25th August 2025, across all INEC State and Local Government offices.
The Commission reminds the public that only citizens turning 18, transferring to new locations, or replacing lost or damaged PVCs are eligible to register; multiple registrations are not allowed.
INEC’s Broader Efforts
INEC has been working to enhance Nigeria’s electoral system with reforms and public outreach since the 2023 elections. Efforts include advancing technology, engaging stakeholders, educating voters, and promoting inclusion.
However, Mrs. Bolanle Shotanwa, a political scientist, stated that the launch of the CVR road show demonstrates INEC’s commitment to initiating early preparations for the 2027 general elections. “By encouraging new voters and proactively addressing issues related to PVCs well in advance, the Commission aims to minimise the last-minute rush that frequently affects credibility.”
Analysts note that registering voters is just the first step; the real challenge is ensuring those registered actually vote. For example, in 2023, Nigeria experienced one of its lowest voter turnout rates in the past twenty years, despite having more than 93 million registered voters.
INEC’s new campaign will serve as a test of its ability to restore trust, reduce apathy, and show its preparation for transparent elections.
