Gunmen Attack Enugu INEC Facility, Kill One Policeman

Unknown gunmen have attacked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Enugu South Local Government Area killing one policeman and leaving another with serious injuries. The gunmen who struck Sunday evening at about 9:12pm were, however, prevented by security men from gaining access to the main building of the facility.

A statement issued in Abuja by Mr Festus Okoye, Esq. National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee of INEC which confirmed the attack, said the security gatehouse of the facility was razed by the hoodlums.

“Fortunately, the attackers could not gain access to the main building as a result of the rapid response from the Police and Army personnel from 82 Division. The State Commissioner of Police and the REC were personally at the scene immediately they received information about the attack.

“Of the two Policemen deployed to protect the facility, one of them lost his life while the other sustained injuries and is receiving treatment. The Commission prays for the repose of the soul of the deceased policeman and the speedy recovery of the injured”, he said.

Mr. Okoye said the attack is being investigated by the security agencies stressing that “a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) in Enugu State co-chaired by the REC and the Commissioner of Police has been convened to discuss the latest incident and design additional strategies of fortifying the offices and protecting the personnel and materials”.

He disclosed that the destroyed gatehouse will be rebuilt, and the Commission is proceeding with its preparations for the 2023 General Election in Enugu State and the entire country as scheduled.

There have been 8 incidents of attacks on INEC facilities between December 2, 2022 and January 15,2023. On December 2,2022, unknown gunmen/ hoodlums attacked Orlu LGA and Oru West LGA. On 3rd December, they attacked Igboeze North LGA office and on August 01,2022 ,that attacked Udenu LGA office.

Izzi LGA office of INEC was attacked on November 27,2022 and on December 12,2022,they attacked the State headquarters, Owerri. Hoodlums also attacked the Isu LGA office of INEC on December 20,2022.

Below is the full text of Mr Okoye’s statement.

“The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Enugu State, Dr. Chukwuemeka J. Chukwu, has reported that our office in Enugu South Local Government Area was attacked by unknown gunmen. The incident occurred around 9.12pm yesterday, Sunday 15th January 2023.
