Hon. Amaka Tessy Okonkwo’s political career shifted significantly following her participation in the International Press Centre’s (IPC) two-day Strategic Communications and Media Engagement Workshop, which was held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on December 12 and 13, 2022.

The workshop was supported by the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) and was organised for female candidates representing the South-South and South-East States.

As the APC candidate for the Onitsha North 1 Constituency in the 2023 Anambra State House of Assembly elections, her capacity-building experience greatly strengthened her campaign strategy and public outreach.

Reflecting on the workshop, Hon. Okonkwo expressed deep appreciation for IPC’s transformative support. “The training taught me so much about how to navigate my election campaign, connect meaningfully with people, and most importantly, how to be confident and outspoken in public spaces,” she shared. “IPC didn’t just train me; they empowered me.”

One of the most tangible outcomes of her IPC training was the empowerment of approximately 50 women in Anambra State, whom she supported in launching small business ventures. Leveraging the communication skills she gained, Hon. Okonkwo promoted her initiatives through WhatsApp and other digital platforms, expanding her reach and building grassroots momentum.

“The workshop empowered me to connect confidently with journalists,” she added. “I gained skills in building rapport, delivering my message with clarity, and presenting myself as approachable during public engagements. That media relationship has been truly invaluable.”

Her efforts soon attracted notable support. She received financial backing from Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, as well as from former Minister of Aviation and Senator Stella Oduah. Hon. Ezennaya Nweke also publicly endorsed her initiative, further validating its impact and promise.

Hon. Okonkwo’s story is a powerful testament to the impact of IPC’s media training in amplifying women’s voices in politics. As she continues to rise, she calls on IPC and similar organisations to sustain their support—helping more women like her break barriers and lead boldly.

“Thanks to IPC, I now have the zeal to go further, to aim higher, and to represent my people with strength and clarity. I’m ready to keep pushing, and I know I’m not alone.”

Her journey not only reflects personal growth but also reinforces IPC’s broader mission: equipping women with the tools to close Nigeria’s political gender gap and elevate their leadership potential.
