Fact-Check: Peter Obi Did Not Say FG Is Using Chinese Traders to Make Igbos Go Hungry  

Claim: An X user posted, claiming that the Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, said that the Federal Government is using the Chinese people to flood the market and subject his Igbo brothers to hunger.

An X user, Comrade Amoda @AmodaOgunlere, on 18th September 2026 uploaded a graphic, which is a picture of the Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi.

In the graphic was an inscription: “ The FG is trying to use the Chinese people to flood the market and making our igbo brothers go hungry”.

Amoda commented that he is “A wicked man that must be allowed near power.”

The claim was posted just two days after the Igbo traders at Lagos International Trade Fair Complex along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway protested what was alleged to be the high number of Chinese merchants now trading in retail in the market.

They expressed concern about a possible threat to the survival of local businesses and the displacement of Nigerian traders from the market.

When the claim was found, it had already gathered over 1.1k views, and the post targeted someone seen as one of the most formidable political leaders in the country, who had also made several misleading claims.

NDRFactcheck investigated the veracity for proper public enlightenment.

Verification

We typed keywords using the Google search engine: “Government is using the Chinese people to flood the market and subjecting his Igbo brothers to hunger.”

From our findings, we saw several unpopular news platforms that reported similar comments in the news.

We went ahead to click on these news platforms. According to one of them, VoiceofNaija, it was reported that during the protest that happened on Monday, a popular Nollywood actor, Joseph Okechukwu, was the one who said it that “The Federal Government brought in Chinese people into Nigeria in masses so that they can destroy Igbo businesses.”

In another publication by gistreel citing a video made by the Nollywood actor that “The Federal Government brought in Chinese people into Nigeria in masses so that they can destroy Igbo businesses. 

For more accurate information, we found the video where he was speaking in Igbo language.

We also looked out for reputable news platforms for such comments from Peter Obi; we found nothing.

Conclusion:

The findings from our research show that the comment was not from Peter Obi, which makes it false.
