Verdict:: False

Full story:

On March 7, 2024, online platforms wishlovequotes.com and nairaland.com disseminated information asserting the existence of an application process for the ongoing Abia State Government’s #10,000 relief/support fund intended for residents of Abia.

During the investigation of this claim by the NDR, it was observed that 116 individuals had viewed the post on nairaland.com. The application form on wishlovequotes.com is open until March 28th, but has generated 61k comments, 211k likes, and 54k shares on the form. The details of the form can be seen here

It became imperative to validate this claim due to the escalating number of individuals applying for it and to bring our findings to the notice of Abia citizens and Nigeria. A lot of phony schemes are out there exploiting the current economic situation against innocent people. Similar websites have been found to have misled Nigerians in the past.

Verification

To verify the authenticity of this claim, we checked the website where the information was published and found out the website’s IP address, using whois.com. Whois.com is a tool used to track IP addresses and verify website authenticity worldwide.

The first red flag was spotted when it was discovered that the website used to share the information was registered in Iceland. Also, the phone number linked to it confirmed its registration in Iceland, and details from whois.com showed no connection to Nigeria. Moreover, additional information indicated that the website is for travel agencies, and not for official government announcements.

Therefore, finding this information on an international site like wishlovequotes.com raises doubts about its truthfulness and existence.

The second red flag was detected with a series of typographical errors on the information such as “Gov. Alex Otti have urge” and “in order to corp distress”. Such errors are common with fraudulent information concocted in a hurry to deceive the public.

To clear all doubts about our findings, we contacted the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Abia State, Mr Kazie Uko, who confirmed that the report was fake and sent a screenshot of the false news via WhatsApp.

To further confirm, we conducted a Google search and found that Vanguard online and Okeigbobaze.com.ng had also reported on the alleged Abia state Government’s #10,000 relief funds with a disclaimer, confirming that the information is not true.

In conclusion, the claim made by wishlovequotes.com/abia regarding the existence of an application for the ongoing Abia State Government’s #10,000 funds intended for residents of Abia is FALSE.
