Claim: A viral video by a TikToker alleges that Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a recent national address, promised that fuel would be sold for ₦100 per litre by the end of August 2026.
Verdict: Claim is fabricated
Full Story:
Global oil prices have surged following heightened tensions involving Israel, the United States, and Iran, with the conflict escalating from March 28, 2026.
This development has had ripple effects across energy markets, including in Nigeria, where local fuel prices reportedly rose by about 48.7%, according to Statista..
The increase has triggered widespread frustration among Nigerians, with many households and businesses struggling to cope with the rising cost of fuel.
While recent reports indicate that Nigeria does not rank among African countries with the highest petrol prices, the federal government has defended current pricing, stating that local fuel costs remain about 50% lower than the global average. The government also attributed this to ongoing economic reforms under Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Amid these developments, a video began circulating on social media, claiming that Tinubu, in a “recent speech”, assured Nigerians that fuel prices would drop to ₦100 per litre by the end of August.
In the clip, the president appears to say, “I want to assure every Nigerian that things are now working fine and that fuel will be sold for ₦100 per litre.”

As of the time of investigating the video, it has gained traction, generating 3.9k likes and 639 reposts.
Is it true that the president made a national speech where such promises were made? NDRFactcheck investigated the claim.
Verification:
A review of recent public statements and speeches by Bola Ahmed Tinubu shows no record of such a promise. One of his latest speeches, delivered during a state visit to Bayelsa State in early April 2026, focused on urging Nigerians to remain hopeful and appreciate relative economic conditions compared to other African countries. However, no mention was made of reducing fuel prices to ₦100.
Further analysis using reverse image search traced the video’s visuals to a 2023 presidential candidates’ media chat organised by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group. In that session, Tinubu discussed plans to remove fuel subsidies but did not make any commitment to sell fuel at ₦100 per litre.
We observed that the image of the media chat was also published on Facebook Ticktok, and X.
Additionally, the video’s audio was subjected to verification using an AI detection tool, which indicated a low authenticity score, suggesting the voice may have been artificially generated. The phrasing and tone in the clip also differ from Tinubu’s known public speeches.

It is worth noting that similar claims in the past, alleging that Tinubu promised ₦100 fuel during his campaign, have previously been debunked.
Conclusion:
There is no credible evidence that Bola Ahmed Tinubu ever promised to reduce fuel prices to ₦100 per litre. The viral video is misleading, combining old footage with AI-generated audio to create a false narrative.
