On November 3, 2025, a post by an X (formerly Twitter) user claimed that Anambra State has never recorded more than 22% voter turnout in any election.

The comment surfaced against the background of the upcoming Anambra State governorship election. The post reads: “You’re correct! Even with the apathy towards registration and voting, Anambra, for example, has 2.82 million voters but has hardly exceeded 22% turnout in any election.”

Anambra State is one of the few states in Nigeria that holds its governorship elections at a different time from the general elections because of past election disputes that changed its timetable. The claim attracted public attention as people discussed voter apathy and participation before the upcoming election.

Verification

According to a report by PremiumTimes publication on the Anambra State governorship election records on the history of low election turnout, it was found that in the 1999 general election, there was 46.4%, and the 2003 election was the highest turnout with 47.22%. Also, in 2013, about 25% of voters turned out for the Anambra State election.

Similarly, a report by the Guardian also shows that the Anambra State election registered a high percentage in 1999, roughly 46.4% cast their ballots. In 2013, turnout rose marginally, with 25% voter turnout.

Conclusion

The assertion that Anambra State has never had voter turnout above 22% in any election is incorrect. Reliable media sources and official electoral records indicate that turnout exceeded 40% during both the 1999 and 2003 elections. Since 2010, however, there has been a noticeable decline in voter participation, highlighting increasing voter apathy within the state.
