An X user, @HighChiefOkoro, posted on October 10th, 2025, claiming that Peter Obi, during his tenure as Governor of Anambra State, failed to conduct local government elections throughout his eight years in office.
This claim surfaced at a politically sensitive time, as Anambra State prepares for its off-cycle election, and because Peter Obi, now a prominent opposition figure, has shown interest in contesting the 2027 presidential election.
The comment stated:
“Peter Obi ruled Anambra for 8 years without a single local government election. Imagine what he’d do as president. Meanwhile, President Tinubu is empowering local governments with autonomy and funding, the same thing Obi never wanted and fought against.”
The claim, which has garnered 8,205 views, 20 comments, 110 retweets, and 200 likes, has seen people like @DavidEboh5 reacting to it, “What is the relevance of this story to the current situation in Anambra under Prof. Soludo or the economic hardship and insecurity in Nigeria under Mr Tinubu? In your mind, you have got something strong for a negative campaign, which only fools and your fellow idiots will take as political points. What is Soludo doing, and what has he achieved to merit reelection? Anu ofia”,

NDR Factcheck, verified if Peter Obi refused to conduct local elections as a governor.
Verification
NDR Factcheck verification revealed that Local Government elections were held on 11th January, 2014, conducted by the state Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC, which covered all 21 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state.
Further research led us to a publication on ChannelTV on January 13, 2014, stating that twenty local government chairmen and their deputies were sworn in in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, by the State Governor, Peter Obi. Additionally, a video here shows Obi voting during the election, describing the exercise as peaceful.
Conclusion
The statement that Peter Obi governed Anambra State for eight years without holding local government elections is false. Verified records show elections took place in January 2014, during his tenure.
