The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has raised fresh alarm over an alleged plot to truncate the 2023 elections process, highlighting danger points on voters register and plot to remove the INEC Chairman.
It also alleged of a grand plot to stop the use of the BVAS in the general election using the instrumentality of the Court if the pressure to soften the Commission’s stance on the use of the BVAS machine in the election.
The coalition also showed different aspects of the preliminary voters register which it claims contains at least 10 million fake registrations allegedly done by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
It called on security agencies especially the Police and the Directorate of State Services (DSS) to arrest and prosecute all those involved in the fake registration and their financiers.
Addressing the media in Abuja on Monday, spokesperson of the opposition, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere said “If Nigerians are to take the security agencies seriously, the Inspector-General of Po¬lice and the Director-General of the DSS must not allow factual allegations of crime against the electoral process to go without action.
“Compromising the voters’ register is a crime, as provid¬ed in the Electoral Act, with a punishment of one-year im¬prisonment, so the security agencies must not keep quiet.
“We call on the DG DSS and the IG of Police to show more than verbal commit¬ment to this electoral process by ensuring the prosecution of the politicians involved in the Omuma Magic despite their political leanings and how highly placed they may seem. Such silence from the security agencies impugns the neutral¬ity of the security agencies”. Omuma ward is the constituency of the Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, where the CUPP alleged that voters register has been padded with foreign names.
“We shall further inform Ni¬gerians that there are still live threats to the 2023 elections. Despite President Muham¬madu Buhari’s verbal commit¬ments that there was no plan to sack the INEC chairman, that dastardly plot is still, un¬fortunately, alive and kicking even harder now within his party. There is still a plot to sack the INEC chairman to frustrate the use of the BVAS machine and the cleaning up of the register.
“It is for this purpose that the Nigerian opposition and, indeed, all Nigerian citizens of goodwill have resolved that we shall resist and reject any form of the arrest of the INEC chairman when he returns to the country.”
He also alleged that there is a bill in the House Representatives to extend the deadline for the currency redesigning policy by the CBN by six months to April 2023, after the general election to allow politicians who have stockpiled currency to be able to use it. He urged the Speaker of the House and all those co-sponsoring the bill with him to desist as it is aimed at promoting vote buying.
