For eight transformative years, the International Press Centre (IPC), with steadfast support from the
European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN I & II), has championed the political empowerment of women through six strategic media training workshops. These sessions, held across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones, have equipped female candidates with the tools to amplify their voices, challenge gender norms, and assert their presence in the political arena.
Dr. Busola Onilogbo Odedina exemplifies the influence of professional development initiatives. Her
involvement in IPC’s Strategic Communications and Media Engagement Workshop, held in Ibadan,
Oyo State, on December 9–10, 2019, represented a significant milestone in her political and
professional growth.
On September 6, 2025, I attended Dr. Odedina’s 7-book launch, an event celebrating creativity and
cultural pride. Highlights included traditional dances, cuisine, the Eyo masquerade, and a chance for
me to try painting. Dr. Odedina kindly gave me a complimentary book, reinforcing the strong bonds
within the IPC family.
We had not been in contact for over five years before our paths reconvened during my work on the
story titled Amplifying Her Voice: IPC’s Media Training and the Fight to Close Nigeria’s Political
Gender Gap, which highlighted the accomplishments of female politicians influenced by IPC’s
impactful programs. After several unsuccessful attempts to reach her using the registration list, I was
finally able to reconnect through WhatsApp.
I am proud of her journey—it's defined by determination, resilience, and courage.
Dr. Odedina, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), describes IPC’s training as a pivotal
experience that enhanced her communication abilities, strengthened her media engagement, and
equipped her to address gender bias directly. Following this development, she has made significant
contributions, including authoring seven empowerment books for adults, thirteen children’s titles,
and publishing over thirty academic works in international forums. Dr. Odedina earned her PhD in
2020 and has since mentored future leaders as an Adjunct Lecturer at Babcock University over the
past three years. She is currently the Director of Administration and Human Resources at the Lagos State Council for
Arts and Culture, with responsibilities that include policy development, cultural advocacy, and
human capital management. In January 2024, she received the traditional title of Erelu from the
Ooni of Ife in recognition of her work related to community and culture.
With support from IPC, Dr. Odedina has started advocacy initiatives, mentored female political
aspirants, and developed media partnerships that have promoted her campaign and interests. IPC’s
training served as a starting point for these activities.
Meeting her again at the book launch represented a significant milestone. Dr. Odedina
demonstrates exceptional courage and conviction, and her story merits recognition and thoughtful
presentation.
