With the imminent arrival of Nigeria’s Ambassador to Indonesia Mr. Usman Ogar, along with the assaulted diplomat Abdurahman Ibrahim, Nigeria may in the next couple of days announce its demands and retaliatory measures seeking redress for the assault on Nigeria’s diplomat in the Asian country.

Nigerians of different shades including ex-diplomats have expressed their anger over a trending video showing some Immigration officials assaulting a Nigerian diplomat in Jakarta, the Indonesian capital.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, had on Tuesday announced Ogar’s recall for consultations at a press briefing in Abuja, where he also stated that the government would review the bilateral relations between Nigeria and the Asian country. The Minister described Indonesia’s action as “an egregious act of international delinquency by the Indonesian state”.

The diplomat, who was apparently in pain while the unyielding Indonesian immigration officers pinned his head to the seat of a car, was heard shouting “I can’t breathe.”

Nigeria’s foreign ministry had previously sent a letter of protest to the Indonesian government saying the mistreatment Mr Ibrahim endured was “against international law and the Vienna Conventions governing diplomatic and consular relations between states”.

Indonesia’s envoy to Nigeria has also been summoned over the incident and had apologised on behalf of his government, the foreign ministry said in a statement. It also noted that Immigration officials had also apologised to Nigeria’s Ambassador in Indonesia.

“The Ambassador of Nigeria to Indonesia has confirmed that the immigration official involved had since come to the Nigerian Embassy to apologise to the Ambassador and the diplomat concerned,” the foreign ministry said.
