It was wild, wild, jubilation in towns and cities in the early hours of Sunday when Senator Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples’ Democratic Party was declared winner of the state governorship contest of July 16.
He polled a total of 403,371 votes or 49.4 percent of total valid votes cast and winning convincingly in 17 local government areas out of 30, to defeat his runner-up Mr. Isiaka Adegboyega Oyetola and incumbent governor of the State who polled 375,027 or 46 percent of total votes cast winning in 13 local government areas.
Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, Vice Chancellor University of Lagos , who was the returning Officer for the election declared Ademola Jackson Adeleke the winner of the election having satisfied all electoral conditions of scoring the highest number of votes and minimum of 25 percent in two-thirds of the local governments in the state.
Upon hearing the announcement a jubilant Senator Ademola Adeleke fell on all fours in front of his elder brother and father of famous musician Davido, Dr. Adedeji Adeleke, in appreciation of his support for standing by him and seeing him through his political struggles and successes.
The election was adjudged as very orderly and peaceful. This will be the second time a challenger would defeat an incumbent in Osun state. Former Governor Rauf Aregbesola defeated incumbent Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola in 2007, though the case was eventually determined by the Court of Appeal in 2011.
A breakdown of the result shows that the two top contenders won overwhelmingly in their home local governments of Ede and Boripe. The votes from Osogbo and Olorunda, Ejigbo, Obokun and Oriade made the difference and gave the victory to the PDP. The results from the other local governments were neck to neck between the two political parties.
The outcome of the election may have stunned bookmakers, majority of whom had predicted a solid win for the APC and the incumbent especially coming just a month after its victory in Ekiti State. One observation for the loss of the incumbent was the perceived general disenchantment of the masses against the hardship and frustrations being experienced by the people in the state.
