The International Press Centre (IPC) joined the media and journalism community in paying its final respects to Mr Dotun Oladipo, former President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) and publisher of Eagle Post Online Newspaper, who was laid to rest on Friday.
In a statement issued by the organisation’s communication officer, Oluwatoyin Ayoade, IPC described Oladipo as a dedicated journalist, media development advocate and strong supporter of initiatives advancing ethical journalism, professional standards and democratic accountability.
In its condolence message to the former GOCOP president’s family, IPC recognised the late Dotun Oladipo’s leadership of the Guild and his influence on colleagues, friends and the wider Nigerian media community.
Before his demise, the Late Dotun Oladipo was a prominent Nigerian veteran journalist, media entrepreneur, and the founder and publisher of The Eagle Online. He was also the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Premium Eagle Media Limited.
His death on August 25, 2026, at age 56, after he fell ill at his Lagos office, shocked Nigeria’s media industry and prompted nationwide mourning, including tributes from President Bola Tinubu, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris, and major professional media bodies.
Characterising his effort in the media and journalism profession, IPC noted that Oladipo’s years of service to the Nigerian media and engagement included effective mobilisation and a commitment to strengthening the journalism profession, adding that his tenure as GOCOP president brought him into sustained institutional engagement with the IPC, particularly on issues of media professionalism, electoral reporting and the development of standards for responsible journalism.
IPC further noted Oladipo’s role in securing GOCOP’s position as one of the first umbrella media professional bodies to formally support and endorse the Nigerian Media Code of Election Coverage, introduced by the IPC in 2018.
“As a measured but persistent advocate and highly effective mobiliser, he was instrumental in securing GOCOP’s position as one of the first umbrella media professional bodies to formally support and endorse the Nigerian Media Code of Election Coverage, introduced by the IPC in 2018 as a professional framework for promoting accuracy, fairness, balance, accountability and conflict-sensitive reporting throughout the electoral cycle.
“He went beyond GOCOP’s institutional endorsement by encouraging many individual members of the Guild to subscribe to the Code and its principles. This demonstrated his personal commitment to good journalism and the importance he placed on professional standards within the media,” the statement partly reads.
Commenting on his legacy, the Executive Director of the International Press Centre, Mr Lanre Arogundade, said Oladipo’s leadership of GOCOP and his engagement with the wider media community reflected a strong commitment to professional standards, responsible journalism and the collective advancement of the Nigerian media.
According to Mr Arogundade, late Dotun Oladipo’s efforts contributed meaningfully to strengthening professional engagement and the media’s role in democratic development and expansion of what the media has done to improve good governance in the country.
“Oladipo’s leadership of GOCOP and his engagement with the wider media community reflected a strong commitment to professional standards, responsible journalism, and the collective advancement of the Nigerian media. His efforts contributed meaningfully to strengthening professional engagement and the media’s role in democratic development.
“The International Press Centre prays for the peaceful repose of his soul and extends its deepest sympathies to his family, GOCOP, colleagues, and the wider Nigerian media community. His contributions to media professionalism and the advancement of responsible journalism will continue to inspire the Nigerian media community,” the statement concluded.
