22 Justices Recommended for Elevation to Supreme Court

Worried by the depletion of the number of justices at the Supreme Court of Nigeria, the Federal Judicial Service Commission( FJSC) on Thursday recommended twenty-two justices of the Court of Appeal to the National Judicial Council, NJC, for elevation to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court of Nigeria currently has 10 justices the lowest in recent years following the death of some of the justices and the retirement of others.

A full complement of the court should be 21. Section 230 of the Constitution of Nigeria (1999) as amended, provides that the Supreme Court of Nigeria shall consist of (a) The Chief Justice of Nigeria (b) Such number of Justices of the Supreme Court, not exceeding Twenty One as may be prescribed by act of National Assembly.
