There was uncertainty about whether the Peoples Democratic Party would hold its convention on March 28 and 29 in Abuja, as court documents showed the Tanimu Turaki faction had asked the Supreme Court to halt the event.

Party members and the public were notified of an ongoing Supreme Court case aimed at preventing a faction from holding a National Convention.

The PDP Turaki faction filed an appeal alongside motions seeking a stay of execution and injunctive orders to restrain all actions connected to the disputed judgement — including the conduct of any convention.

The issues before the Supreme Court are fundamental — bordering on jurisdiction, legality, and the validity of the very actions being hurriedly pursued. In law, once such questions are before the apex court, any attempt to rush ahead and create irreversible outcomes is not only questionable but also amounts to an abuse of the court process.

It is unlikely that the Supreme Court would make a pronouncement on the matter before the convention, which will hold this weekend. It is unclear whether a later pronouncement by the Supreme Court could invalidate the National Convention or whether the matter would become a mere academic exercise.
