President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday formally inaugurated Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP), charging him to reposition the Nigeria Police Force for greater professionalism and public trust.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, moments before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

Mr Olatunji Disu became the acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) on February 23, 2026, after Kayode Egbetokun resigned from the position.

He was sworn in as the substantive Inspector General of Police after he took the oath of office on Wednesday, March 4th, 2026.

In attendance were Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Minister of Police Affairs Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, and Head of Service Mrs Esther Walson-Jack, among other dignitaries.

His confirmation also followed the endorsement of his appointment by the Nigeria Police Council earlier in the week. The council’s decision paved the way for Wednesday’s formal ceremony, which drew senior government officials, security chiefs and cabinet members.

However, at his decoration as acting IGP last week, President Tinubu urged him to “make the police better than you met it,” underscoring the need to strengthen discipline, improve inter-agency collaboration and restore confidence in law enforcement.

In his response, Disu pledged to entrench accountability within the Force, enforce zero tolerance for corruption and human rights abuses, and end impunity.

With his oath of office now taken, Disu assumes full responsibility for steering the Nigeria Police Force at a time when demands for reform, transparency and improved security outcomes remain high.

Disu Inaugurates Committee on State Police

Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, launched a state police committee on Wednesday to improve national security.

At his first Conference with Senior Police Officers at the Peacekeeping Conference Centre in Force Headquarters, Abuja, Disu urged the seven-member committee to act professionally. He highlighted how crucial state policing is for ensuring national security.

The IGP informed the committee that their work was “significant and timely,” and would help define the framework for state policing in Nigeria.

“In carrying out this assignment, your deliberations must be guided by professionalism, objectivity, and a clear appreciation of the unique complexities of policing a diverse nation such as our own,” the IGP said.

The committee’s responsibilities include reviewing policing models both in Nigeria and abroad, evaluating community security requirements and new risks nationwide, recommending an operational framework for creating and managing state police systems, and tackling matters related to recruitment, training, standards, and allocation of resources.

“If thoughtfully designed and effectively implemented, State Policing holds significant potential benefits for our country,” Disu, a former commander of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS), said at the event.

The IGP’s Background

Mr. Olatunji Disu is a native of Lagos State. He was born on April 13, 1966, and enlisted in the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police. Over more than three decades, he has held strategic operational and investigative roles across the country.

He gained prominence as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021, where he was credited with strengthening crime response mechanisms and enhancing tactical policing.

He also served as Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department and the anti-kidnapping unit in Rivers State from 2014 to 2015. Before he was appointed IGP, he oversaw the Special Protection Unit and the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos as an Assistant Inspector-General of Police.

Mr. Disu holds qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security studies, legal psychology and entrepreneurship.

Immediately after administering the oath to Disu, President Tinubu also swore in newly appointed commissioners of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission and members of the Federal Civil Service Commission, before proceeding to preside over the FEC meeting.
