An additional list of 19 names including five former governors was submitted by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, being the second list of Ministerial Nominees from President Bola Tinubu, to the Senate on Wednesday afternoon.
The list of the nominees was submitted to Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, at about 03:19pm after being admitted into the Red Chamber while the Senate sitting was still in session.
This brings to 47, the number of nominees that the President has sent to the Senate for screening. It will be recalled that Hon. Gbajabiamila had last Thursday submitted the first list with 28 nominees to the Senate, hinting that more names would be forwarded to the lawmakers for scrutiny.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, read the names out on the floor of the Senate after the screening of the first batch of names sent by the President last week.
Amongst those newly nominated are Ahmed Tijjani, Bosun Tijjani, Maryam Shetti, Ishak Salako, Tunji Alausa, Tanko Sununu,
Adegboyega Oyetola, Atiku Bagudu, Bello Matawalle, Ibrahim Geidam, Simon Bako Lalong, Lola Adejo, Shuaibu Abubakar,
Tahir Mamman, Aliyu Sabi, Alkali Ahmed, Heineken Lokpobiri, Uba Maigari, Zephaniah Jissalo.
They give former governors from the pack are: Adegboyega Oyetola (Osun), Bello Matawale (Zamfara), Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi), Ibrahim Geidam (Yobe), and Solomon Lalong (Plateau).
If approved, this will be the first time that the number of ministers will exceed 42, since the return to democratic rule in 1999. It is, however, unclear, if the President may drop any of the nominees based on the recommendation of the Senate or if he’s not satisfied with their performance or their documentation during the screening exercise.
