The Senate has confirmed Mr Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance under President Bola Tinubu.

On Wednesday, March 11, 2026, Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio announced the confirmation after the lawmakers gave their approval through a voice vote during the Committee of the Whole.

President Tinubu previously submitted his nomination to the House, appointing him as the successor to Mrs Doris Uzoka-Anite for the position of Minister of State for Finance.

In his remarks during the screening, Oyedele described his nomination as an opportunity to contribute to national development at a critical moment for the country’s economy.

“With over two decades of experience working with national governments, multilateral institutions, and global corporations, my journey across the private sector, academia, and public policy has focused on fiscal governance and economic transformation,” the 50-year-old told senators.

Mr Oyedele described his appointment as a call to serve at a critical time when the country is facing fiscal challenges.

“However, this moment is not about personal accomplishments; it is a call to serve at a critical time when Nigeria faces significant fiscal challenges and remarkable opportunities.”

The newly confirmed minister also expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for the confidence shown in him through the nomination. He described his appearance before the Senate as a privilege and thanked lawmakers for the opportunity to present his vision.

“I am deeply honoured to appear before this distinguished chamber today. I thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the confidence reposed in me through this nomination, and I thank the Senate for the opportunity to share my vision,” the public policy expert, accountant, and economist told the lawmakers.

Mr Taiwo Oyedele holds a degree in Accounting from the University of Lagos and has completed several professional and executive programmes in taxation, public finance and economic policy. He is also a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and a recognised expert in tax policy and fiscal governance.

Before he was nominated minister, Oyedele served as chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms. In that role, he led efforts aimed at restructuring Nigeria’s tax system and improving fiscal governance.

He was appointed to head the committee in July 2023. Oyedele and his team spent more than two years working on reforms designed to modernise the country’s tax framework. Their efforts eventually resulted in the introduction of a new tax regime intended to streamline tax administration and strengthen revenue generation.

Before his role in government, Oyedele built an extensive career in taxation and fiscal policy across the private sector and international institutions.

He previously served as the Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where he advised governments and multinational organisations on tax policy, public finance and economic reforms.

With his confirmation, Oyedele is expected to support the Ministry of Finance in implementing reforms aimed at addressing Nigeria’s fiscal challenges, improving revenue generation and creating an enabling environment for investment and economic growth.
