She’s not emerging as a presidential candidate by default because President Joe Biden stepped down on health grounds. She had always expressed her intention to be one and has shown the capacity to lead the world’s third most populous country.
In the rundown to the 2020 Democrats primaries, she contested to pick the ticket but had to drop off for President Biden. Interestingly, because of her good showing in the primaries, she was teased by Mr. Donald Trump that she was not going to be the first black president in America because she was a socialist.
Logos of the two leading parties in America
His euphemism for socialism was to describe Kamala Harris’s support to the middle class as a worthy representative of that group herself. She was born in Oakland, California as the daughter of immigrants, to middle-class parents; of Canadian and Indian origins. Kamala Harris has sustained that middle-class tradition. She pursued her American dream in the typical way of an average American.
She went to college and became a lawyer. She picked up employment and worked in law chambers before becoming a state prosecutor. She’s worked with the government and rose to become Attorney General in the State of California, the most populous state in the United States. She was tapped to become Vice President to President Joe Biden. Their joint ticket campaigned and defeated incumbent President Donald Trump and Mike Pence.
She has led the fight for the freedom of women to make decisions about their bodies, the freedom to live safe from gun violence, the freedom to vote, and the freedom to drink clean water and breathe clean air, and other minority interest groups.
She was elected Senator in 2017, where she championed legislation to fight hunger, provide rent relief, improve maternal health care, expand access to capital for small businesses, revitalize America’s infrastructure, and combat the climate crisis. She interviewed two Supreme Court nominees while serving on the Judiciary Committee. She also worked to keep the American people safe from foreign threats and crafted bipartisan legislation to assist in securing American elections while serving on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
President Joe Biden’s Endorsement Speech
My fellow Americans,
Over the past three and a half years, we have made great progress as a nation.
Today, America has the strongest economy in the world. We’ve made historic investments in rebuilding our nation, in lowering prescription drug costs for seniors, and in expanding affordable health care to a record number of Americans.
President Biden and Vice President Harris
“We’ve provided critically needed care to a million veterans exposed to toxic substances. Passed the first gun safety law in 30 years. Appointed the first African American woman to the Supreme Court. And passed the most significant climate legislation in the history of the world. America has never been better positioned to lead than we are today.
“I know none of this could have been done without you, the American people. Together, we overcame a once-in-a-century pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We’ve protected and preserved our democracy. And we’ve revitalized and strengthened our alliances around the world.
“It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve as your President. While it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.
“My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made.
Mitchell and Barrack Obama’s Endorsement
The Obamas, two of the most popular figures in the Democratic Party, were the most prominent persons who held back as the rest of the party coalesced around Harris during the week. Hitherto, it was rumoured that Michelle Obama could be drafted into the race to replace President Biden based on her popularity and favourable poll showings.
Their endorsement was a thrilling relief for Kamala Harris because it helped to eliminate one of the most anticipated hurdles on Harris’s way to the Democrats’ nomination. It was soothing when Barack Obama, whose popularity amongst Democrats is unequaled, and Mitchell who cuts a niche among the young people called to endorse Kamala Harris on Friday. It signified a lot for the Harris campaign going forward.
Harris and Barack Obama have come a long way as they have been in contact over the years, with the former president often serving as a sounding board dating back to her days as California state attorney general. They have talked multiple times in recent days as Harris sought to rally support for her nomination after President Joe Biden exited the race and endorsed her.
On the call, Obama said Democrats are “going to be underdogs” and that as Harris herself has said, she will have to earn the trust of voters across the country. We’re absolutely confident that you’re gonna be able to make it happen. And I wanna make sure that you know, we’re sending a message out to not just Democrats but every American — Democrat.
“We agree with President Biden — choosing Kamala was one of the best decisions he’s made. She has the resume to prove it: As a prosecutor, she defended the Constitution and fought for folks who deserve a fair shake. As California’s Attorney General, she worked hard to ensure everyone was treated fairly, no matter who they are or who they love. As a Senator, she was one of the strongest voices holding the Trump administration accountable. And, as Vice President, she helped lead the charge on expanding the Affordable Care Act, combating climate change, fighting for reproductive freedom, equality, and the rule of law.
“But Kamala has more than a resume. She has the vision, the character, and the strength that this critical moment demands. There is no doubt in our mind that Kamala Harris has exactly what it takes to win this election and deliver for the American people. At a time when the stakes have never been higher, she gives us all reason to hope.
“We know over the next few months, Kamala will continue to make her case directly to the American people — Democrats, Republicans, and independents alike. As she does, she will have our full support — and we look forward to watching her unite our party and our country around a vision for a brighter, fairer, more prosperous future.
“We’re going to do everything we can to elect Kamala Harris the next President of the United States. And we hope you’ll join us” Barack and Michelle Obama
Nancy Pelosi’s Endorsement Statement
“America has been truly blessed by the wisdom and leadership of President Joe Biden. With love and gratitude, I salute President Biden for always believing in the possibilities of America and giving people the opportunity to reach their fulfillment. As one of our country’s most consequential presidents, President Biden has been not only on the right side of history, but on the right side of the future.
Nancy Pelosi, Former Speaker of House of Reps
“Today, it is with immense pride and limitless optimism for our country’s future that I endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for President of the United States. My enthusiastic support for Kamala Harris for President is official, personal, and political. Officially, I have seen Kamala Harris’s strength and courage as a champion for working families, notably fighting for a woman’s right to choose.
“In the Democratic Party, our diversity is our strength and our unity is our power. Now, we must unify and charge forward to resoundingly defeat Donald Trump and enthusiastically elect Kamala Harris as the next President of the United States. Onward to victory!
Kamala Harris’s Response to President Biden’s Endorsement
“On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and his decades of service to our country. His remarkable legacy of accomplishment is unmatched in modern American history, surpassing the legacy of many Presidents who have served two terms in office.
“It is a profound honour to serve as his Vice President, and I am deeply grateful to the President, Dr. Biden, and the entire Biden family. I first came to know President Biden through his son Beau. We were friends from our days working together as Attorneys General of our home states. As we worked together, Beau would tell me stories about his Dad. The kind of father—and the kind of man—he was. And the qualities Beau revered in his father are the same, the same values, I have seen every single day in Joe’s leadership as President: His honesty and integrity. His big heart and commitment to his faith and his family. And his love of our country and the American people.
“With this selfless and patriotic act, President Biden is doing what he has done throughout his life of service: putting the American people and our country above everything else. I am honoured to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination. Over the past year, I have traveled across the country, talking with Americans about the clear choice in this momentous election. And that is what I will continue to do in the days and weeks ahead. I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda. We have 107 days until Election Day. Together, we will fight. And together, we will win,”.
In another message, she wrote: “Joe’s legacy of accomplishment is unmatched in modern history. He got the COVID-19 pandemic under control, created nearly 16 million new jobs, and brought together Republicans and Democrats to pass historic legislation.
Trump Turns Down Debate Request Until Harris Is Formally Nominated
Former President Donald Trump’s campaign on Thursday said it will not commit to a debate against Vice President Kamala Harris, at least until the Democratic Party makes a formal decision on its nominee.
Speaking with reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Washington on Thursday, Harris in response said she is “ready to debate Donald Trump,” adding the “voters deserve to see the split screen that exists in this race on the debate stage.”
She also accused Trump of “backpedaling” after agreeing to participate in the second presidential debate scheduled for September 10 on ABC News.
Throwing more jabs at Trump, Kamala Harris said “Throughout my career, I have taken on perpetrators of all kinds. Creditors who abused women, fraudsters who ripped off consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for their gain. I know Donald Trump’s type. I am prepared to defend my record against his on the debate stage. The question is: Can he do the same?
Democratic Party’s Convention
The various endorsements by different blocs within the Democratic Party may have paved the way for a successful and smooth-sailing convention. The coast seems clear for the emergence of Kamala Harris as the Party’s candidate. She keeps riding the momentum of her new candidacy with a handful of alumni of Hillary Clinton’s and Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaigns rallying behind her.
A poll by the New York Times concludes that Democrats, are ready for Kamala “Nearly four-fifths say the party should nominate her for president, compared with 14 percent who say they should nominate someone else. A slightly larger 27 percent say the party should encourage a competitive nominating process, but 70 percent say the party should unite behind Ms. Harris and quickly make her the nominee”.
Initially, the party could be said to have been divided into three camps: Those who wanted to stick with Biden, those who wanted to replace him with Harris, and a third group that wanted an open nominating process where multiple candidates could compete at next month’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The stage is now set for a formal nomination of Kamala Harris as the candidate of the party. This is regarded a game-changer: Will America be ready to vote for her first female President? The next few months will tell.
