The Patriots and the Nigerian Political Summit Group (NPSG) will host the National Summit on the Future of Nigeria’s Constitutional Democracy from July 15 to 17, 2025, in Abuja.

This event unites Nigeria’s top leaders, former Presidents, Governors, industry figures, civic leaders, and key stakeholders to discuss creating a new democratic constitution that will, hopefully, represent the will and diversity of Nigerians.

The summit aims at presenting a Draft Legislative Bill for a New Constitution of Nigeria, developed through broad consultations and set to be submitted to the Presidency and the National Assembly.

The summit, titled “Actualising a Constitutional Democracy That Works for All in Nigeria,” seeks to support efforts toward developing an inclusive and adaptable constitutional framework, with consideration of potential changes to the current 1999 Constitution.

The summit is led by Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former Commonwealth Secretary-General and Chair of The PATRIOTS, a group dedicated to democratic renewal and inclusive governance in Nigeria.

Eminent Nigerians scheduled to address the summit include Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Prof. Wole Soyinka, General T.Y. Danjuma, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, Mallam Tanko Yakasai, General Ike Nwachukwu, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, Chief Mamman Osuman, SAN, Ambassador Godknows Igali, Elder Solomon Asemota, SAN, Obong Victor Attah, Senator Azuta Mbata, Prof. Akin Oyebode, SAN, Comrade Joe Ajaero of the NLC, Hajia Maryam Inna Ciroma, Ambassador Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosumu, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, Barrister Femi Falana, SAN, and Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, National Security Adviser, among others.

The Organising Committee for the summit is co-chaired by Otunba Gbenga Daniel and Aminu Tambuwal, while Prof. Mike Ozekhome, SAN, leads the Summit Resolutions Committee.

The conveners, in collaboration with the NPSG—a group that includes professionals, political reform advocates, and constitutional supporters—are working together to address reforms related to Nigeria’s governance structure.

The 1999 Constitution, which was promulgated near the end of military rule with limited public engagement, has been widely criticised for reinforcing a unitary structure that restricts federalism, weakens local governance, and does not adequately represent Nigeria’s diverse, multi-ethnic composition.

Many of Nigeria’s ongoing issues—such as insecurity, youth unemployment, weak institutions, poor services, and unequal resource control—stem from constitutional dysfunction.

Despite changes in global technology, economics, environment, and geopolitics, Nigeria’s outdated governance structure continues to hinder progress toward a just and inclusive society.

According to Olawale Okunniyi, Head, Summit Joint Secretariat, “This summit is not just another political jamboree—it is a deliberate and inclusive national call to action. Its principal objective is to forge a new constitution that empowers Nigerians, strengthens institutions, promotes electoral justice, protects minority rights, and enables broad-based development at all levels.

“It promises to be a cross-sectoral, cross-generational, and cross-regional dialogue, drawing from the collective wisdom and aspirations of Nigerians from all walks of life”.
