For Sowore and twelve other activists advocating for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the court’s decision to grant them bail on Friday marked a legal victory. However, law enforcement authorities subsequently re-arrested Omoyele Sowore outside the Kuje Magistrate Court after his bail was granted.
Police officers dragged Sowore into a waiting vehicle despite the bail earlier granted to him by the court. The activist initially resisted when officers attempted to take him away without providing any explanation.
But he was not given a chance as Policemen overpowered him, dragging him into a waiting van, racing away. Another account said he was manhandled and dragged on the floor.
The Police claimed to be acting on a remand order, but none was shown or seen. Despite the court’s explicit ruling granting bail, the police reportedly transported Sowore to the Kuje Correctional Centre, claiming they were acting on superior orders tied to the undisclosed remand order.
He was taken to Kuje Prison by the Police Officers, citing a secret remand order.
Earlier, Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’id had granted bail to Sowore and 13 others who were arrested during the recent #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja.
Arrest After Court Bail
Earlier, a Magistrate’s Court in Kuje, Abuja, on Friday granted bail to publisher and activist Omoyele Sowore, Aloy Ejimakor, a member of the legal team representing detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the IPOB leader’s brother, and ten other defendants.
They were each granted bail for ₦500,000, with two sureties in like sum, following their arraignment on charges of inciting public disturbance and breach of peace in connection with the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest held on Monday, 20 October 2025, in Abuja.
While Ejimakor, Emmanuel Kanu, and ten others were arrested during the protest and subsequently remanded at the Kuje Correctional Facility, Sowore was separately arrested on October 23 within the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja, shortly after attending Nnamdi Kanu’s terrorism trial to show solidarity.
The 13 defendants were arraigned before Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’id on two counts of unlawful assembly and disturbance of public peace. All defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
As part of their bail conditions, the court directed the defendants to submit their international passports, provide a verified National Identification Number (NIN), and present a three-year tax clearance certificate before their release.
