The nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) commenced on Monday, 18th August 2025, with the online pre-registration of voters, recording 69,376 Nigerians’ participation within seven hours.
The registration portal went live at 8.30 am, but by 3.30 pm, just seven hours later, as many as 69,376 Nigerians pre-registered online. Of this figure, 33,803 (48.7%) are male, while 35,573 (51.3%) are female. In terms of age, 48,033 (69.2%) are young persons aged 18-34. The portal is available 24 hours every day of the week at https://cvr.inecnigeria.org
The Commission says it will commence the in-person registration on Monday, 25th August 2025, at its 811 State and Local Government offices nationwide from 9.00 am – 3.00 pm during weekdays (Monday to Friday) only. This will enable those who prefer the in-person option to register, and for the online pre-registrants to complete their registration. The two options will proceed simultaneously throughout the CVR as indicated in the schedule earlier released by the Commission.
In a statement, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education, Mr Sam Olumekun, assured Nigerians that from next week, the Commission will be giving weekly updates on the CVR, including a detailed breakdown by State, gender, age, occupation and disability.
“For emphasis, the public should note that voter registration is only open to Nigerian citizens who are at least 18 years old and who are not registered voters. Double or multiple registration is a violation of the law. However, inter-State/FCT and intra-State/FCT transfer of voters as well as the replacement of lost or damaged voters’ cards are allowed during the CVR
Announcing the launch of the exercise, INEC said, “In-person registration will take place at all its 37 state offices and 774 local government area offices nationwide, to ensure easy access for prospective voters.”
INEC also clarified that the CVR exercise is targeted at Nigerians who have turned 18 and are yet to register, as well as those seeking to update their details, transfer their polling units, or replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
“The CVR exercise is open to new voters aged 18 and above, those who wish to collect or transfer their Permanent Voter Cards, and individuals who need to replace lost or damaged PVCs,” the commission stated.
INEC encouraged Nigerians to take advantage of the opportunity by ensuring prompt registration. It further warned against multiple registrations, cautioning that violators could face legal consequences.
The body reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity, and the commission added that it remains dedicated to consolidating democracy and ensuring that every eligible voter has the chance to participate in the upcoming elections.
