The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed the proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 general elections.
The voter revalidation exercise was originally planned to ensure that the National Register of Voters remains reliable and current. Its goal is to verify existing records, fix errors, and remove ineligible entries before the 2027 general and gubernatorial elections.
On Friday, April 10, 2026, the Commission met with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to discuss important electoral matters, during which the decision was made.
In a statement signed by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Commission said the postponement followed extensive deliberations on the timing and implications of the exercise.
The latest development reinforces an earlier directive issued by INEC suspending the scheduled revalidation exercise and instructing RECs nationwide to halt all publicity and logistical arrangements tied to the programme.
The directive, contained in an official communication signed by the Commission’s Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, came just days after INEC had announced that the exercise would commence nationwide on April 13, 2026.
The commission explained that the validation process aimed to check and update existing voter records, confirm personal data accuracy, remove duplicate or ineligible entries, and improve the overall trustworthiness of the voter register.
INEC noted that the voter revalidation process remains a sensitive and complex undertaking that requires adequate planning to ensure transparency, credibility, and public trust.
Despite halting physical activities ahead of the scheduled date, the Commission directed RECs to continue internal preparations, including the recruitment and deployment of personnel, as well as ensuring the readiness of technological infrastructure, such as the INEC Voter Enrolment Devices.
“RECs are also directed to step down all publicity and arrangements for the voter revalidation exercise and await further directives from the Commission,” the notice stated.
The Commission also changed its engagement format with RECs by changing from a physical meeting earlier scheduled to be held at INEC headquarters in Abuja to a virtual session.
According to the notice titled “Notice of Meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (Virtual),” the meeting initially fixed for April 9, 2026, was held via Zoom, with RECs advised to remain in their respective states pending further instructions.
INEC said login details for subsequent virtual engagements would be communicated once arrangements are finalised.
The Commission reiterated that all publicity campaigns and field preparations related to the voter revalidation exercise must remain suspended until further notice, while expressing regret over any inconvenience caused to stakeholders.
It claimed that the decisions were taken in the interest of ensuring a smooth, credible, and inclusive electoral process, adding that further directives, including a possible revised timeline for the exercise, would be communicated in due course.
With the suspension of the validation exercise, INEC assured Nigerians that the voter revalidation exercise remains a key component of its mandate to maintain a credible and up-to-date National Register of Voters, designed to verify existing records, correct inaccuracies, and eliminate ineligible entries.
