A few upsets was recorded as the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC released the list of candidates eligible to participate in the 2019 general elections.
For the presidential election, a total of 72 names and 72 Vice presidential candidates were listed but the name of Prof Jerry Gana as the Presidential Candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP was conspicuously missing from the list. In its remarks, the election body put “court order, party yet to submit name of candidate.
Among other highlights, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers state does not have candidates for the National Assembly election. This INEC remarks is in compliance with court order.
There are 28 women on the list as either the candidate or the running mate. The youngest candidate is the 30-year-old Johnson Omede, being a vice-presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party.
A total of 72 Presidential candidates and another 72 Vice-Presidential candidates are expected to run for the presidential election.
The list of candidates has also been published in the various state headquarters of INEC.
