A photo on social media shows MC Oluomo, the new National President of the NURTW, with 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi.

MC Oluomo, a prominent Lagos transport leader and supporter of the All Progressives Congress (APC ), is a notable public figure in Nigeria’s political and social landscape. His visible political involvement and role in Lagos’ transport sector have associated him with various political activities and mobilisation efforts, particularly during election periods.

A viral image circulated online, claiming Peter Obi visited MC Oluomo to show support after he was appointed NURTW President. Given Obi’s reputation for strong opposition and MC Oluomo’s ties to APC, the photo sparked speculation about a possible shift in Obi’s stance and questions about his integrity. The image quickly spread on social media, fueling debate and scepticism among various groups.

In this context, Ndrfactcheck decided to verify the image against the backdrop that manipulated visuals are increasingly involved in the spread of political misinformation, which can influence voters, affect trust, and alter public narratives.

Verification:

Ndrfactcheck conducted a Google Reverse Image Search on the image, and we noticed that the result shows the image to be related to MC Oluomo’s recent appointment as the national president of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

In our search, we noticed that the images are similar to those shared by social media users here, and  here, . We also saw that  Mr Obi is not in any of these pictures, contradicting the claimant’s post. Moreover, mainstream media outlets, such as Politics Nigeria, have also published similar images of MC Oluomo without Mr Obi featured.

Further check by Ndrfactcheck found that the image had been debunked by Peter Obi on his X handle. He described the pictures and accompanying stories as fake, doctored, and deliberately designed to mislead the public. Obi emphasised that he has not held such meetings and would have personally shared them if they occurred. He warned Nigerians and the international community about the dangers of disinformation, urging vigilance and verification before sharing content. Reaffirming his political focus, Obi stated that his commitment is to addressing insecurity, strengthening the rule of law, improving education and healthcare, and lifting millions out of poverty.

Conclusion

The viral image suggesting that Peter Obi visited MC Oluomo to pay homage after his inauguration as NURTW National President is manipulated. Verification through reverse image search, comparison with authentic media reports, and Peter Obi’s own public clarification confirm that the photo is doctored and misleading. This false narrative reflects a growing trend of using altered visuals to sway public opinion and discredit political figures. Nigerians are advised to remain cautious, verify sources, and avoid amplifying unverified content that undermines truth and democratic discourse.
