Claim: A YouTube video claims that Senator Iyiola Omisore won the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in Osun State and later handed over the party’s ticket to another candidate.

Verdict: False

Background

Senator Iyiola Ajani Omisore is an experienced Nigerian politician from Osun State. He served as the state’s Deputy Governor (1999–2003), later became a Senator, and ultimately took on the role of National Secretary for the All Progressives Congress (APC). Throughout his career, Omisore has run for governor of Osun State under various party platforms before joining the APC.

In 2025, Senator Omisore declared his intention to contest for the APC governorship ticket ahead of the August 8, 2026, Osun State governorship election, unveiling a campaign themed “Fix the Broken, Restore Our Dreams.”

He initially opposed moves by the party to adopt a consensus candidate, insisting on a competitive primary due to the number of aspirants.

However, in early December 2025, the APC screening panel disqualified Omisore and six other aspirants from participating in the party’s governorship primary scheduled for December 13. The party cited failure to meet internal requirements, particularly issues relating to valid sponsorship across local government areas.

Omisore and other disqualified aspirants rejected the decision, describing the screening process as flawed and politically motivated. Omisore publicly criticised the exercise, calling it unfair. Nevertheless, following consultations with party leaders, he later aligned with the APC’s consensus arrangement and publicly endorsed Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji as the party’s candidate.

Despite this, a viral video posted by a YouTube account, GanusiTV, claimed that Omisore had emerged as the APC governorship candidate and subsequently ceded the ticket to the party’s consensus candidate. This prompted NDRFact to verify the claim.

Verification

NDRFactCheck searched for reports from credible media organisations supporting the claim that Omisore won the APC primary and later handed over the ticket. No such reports were found.

A review of the APC’s official website also showed no evidence that Omisore participated in or won the party’s governorship primary. The only related publication was President Bola Tinubu’s congratulatory message to the APC’s candidate, Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji.

Meanwhile, a closer examination of the video revealed two contradictory overlay texts: one stating “Iyiola Omisore Won Primary Election” and another reading “Happening now: Iyiola Omisore handover APC Osun State governorship slot.” The disjointed placement and lack of coherence between the captions raised immediate red flags.

Further analysis involved extracting keyframes from the video using Invid and subjecting them to reverse image searches. Results showed that Omisore only won a governorship primary on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2014, not under the APC.

Additional checks indicated that the scenes of celebrations in the video were linked to pre-primary consultations and campaign activities by Omisore across parts of Osun State in November 2025, rather than any APC primary victory.

Although APC flags appeared in the footage, findings showed they were connected to his campaign outreach before his disqualification, not to a primary election outcome. See the screenshot of the campaign event below:

Conclusion

While Senator Iyiola Omisore previously won a governorship primary under the PDP in 2014, he did not participate in, win, or cede the APC governorship ticket for the 2026 Osun State election. The claim presented in the viral YouTube video is therefore, false.
