On March 31st, 2026, a letter allegedly authored by Honourable Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, announcing his resignation as Nigeria’s Minister of Power, circulated widely on social media. Many reports indicated that his resignation was to allow him time to prepare for the Oyo State governorship election.
President Tinubu had given a 31st March deadline to his ministers and aides with political aspirations to resign their positions. The letter, which was dated 26th March 2026, reads, “RESIGNATION AS HONOURABLE MINISTER OF POWER
“With sincere appreciation, I am writing to Your Excellency to formally retire from my role as the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Power.
“I want to express my profound gratitude to Your Excellency for giving me the chance to serve our wonderful country under your leadership and for having faith in me. Contributing to the initiatives targeted at bolstering Nigeria’s electricity industry in accordance with your Renewed Hope Agenda has been an honour.
“I’ve decided to step down so that I can devote all my time and resources to my goal of running for governor of Oyo State.
“Your Excellency, please accept my sincere gratitude and respect.”
Earlier this month, the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, directed all his cabinet members who had the intention to jostle for any political offices in the next 2027 general election to step down from their positions by 31st March, 2026.

Verification
NDRFactcheck searched for a reputable news platform to ascertain the fact; according to the Punch newspaper publication’s online report of 31st March, 2026, Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has denied resignation rumours amid speculation over his 2027 political ambitions, calling the reports fake.
According to the Punch newspaper, the minister of power responded through his special assistant on media, Bolaji Tunji, via WhatsApp chat, dismissing the report as fake news.
A source close to the minister confirmed to NDRFactcheck that the letter in circulation “did not emanate from the minister, adding emphatically that “he has not resigned”.
For further investigation, we also visited the social media handles of the Honourable Adebayo Adelabu, with no official confirmation or letter of such from him here and here.
As of the time of this report, there had been no announcement from the presidency, the Ministry of Power, or official government channels to corroborate the resignation.
Conclusion
The claim that Adebayo Adelabu has resigned as Nigeria’s minister of power is false. While a purported resignation letter was widely shared on WhatsApp and social media platforms, there has been no official confirmation from the minister himself, the presidency, or the Ministry of Power regarding his resignation.
