NDR Fact-Check came across a post by an X user known as @GideonAnyebe, who shared a picture on his handle on the 19th August 2024, claiming that in 2020 during COVID-19, Deji Adeleke donated $1.3 million to the Federal Government of Nigeria, and the family also distributed over 6,000 bags of rice across Osun State. Finally,  Davido donates the proceeds of the ‘Dolce & Gabanna’ video to coronavirus research.

Deji Adeleke is a billionaire businessman and president of Adeleke University, which is situated in his native Ede town, in Osun State. He is also the CEO of Pacific Holdings Limited, and his younger brother, Ademola Adeleke, is the incumbent governor of Osun State.

The comment was made due to the virality of the donation made by the business mogul at his late mother’s church on 18th August 2024 where he donated N1bn to the Cherubim and Seraphim Church in honour of his late mother, Nnena Esther Adeleke. The donation was made during a Thanksgiving service held at the church’s headquarters in Lagos on Sunday.

Adeleke presented the donation to the Centenary Endowment Fund on behalf of his late mother, saying, “We donate a sum of N1bn in honour of our late mum.”

The above event led to the claim, and several users on the group have been for and against it. For example, a user was seen asking, ‘To Who?, another user asked, ‘Lamba 🤣 bags of rice across the Osun State’, ‘Billionaire in dollars???

I don’t think so #1B in cash is a drop.
That’s not logical’ etc.

However, this has been a subject of debate where a WhatsApp user was seen to say, ‘Davido is a billionaire in Dollars. ₦1b is just a drop’.

To check the veracity of the claim, NDR Fact-Check submitted the claim to an investigation.

Verification:
According to the research carried out, reported by  ChannelTv on the 31st March 2020, ‘Davido’s father Mr. Adedeji Adeleke has donated N500m to the Federal Government to help fight the COVID-19’.

In an in-depth finding, it was revealed that David Adeleke popularly known as DAVIDO, the son of the business mogul, posted it on his X handle.

In an NDR investigation, it was discovered that another news platform, on the same day, 1st April,202o Daily Post  published the news.

Conclusion:
However, there were some other claims on the comment that we found to be accurate such as the donation of 6,640 bags of rice to residents of Osun State, also according to CCN ‘Davido releases ‘Dolce & Gabbana’ music video and donates proceeds to coronavirus research after fiancée tests positive’.

Hence, the claim that Deji Adeleke donated $1.3m during COVID-19 is False.
