A post circulating on X (formerly Twitter) on 24th March, 2026, reported irregularities during the current voter registration in Iree, claiming that people who do not live in the town were brought in to register.

The post further alleged that the individuals were escorted by persons impersonating officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and that the incident was linked to people associated with Ademola Adeleke, the Governor of Osun State.

The claim also suggested that the alleged action could affect the credibility of the voter registration process ahead of future elections, especially the August 8 governorship election. The post gained online attention and drew reactions from users who expressed concern about the integrity of the electoral process.

A video is attached of two men wearing caps with the inscription “AMBO” seen engaging in a furious conversation with two security personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The post reads  “herehere, and here.

Because the claim involves voter registration and electoral credibility, which are sensitive democratic issues, it became necessary for NDRFactcheck to verify the information. Past misinformation related to elections has caused tension in different parts of Nigeria, making it important to confirm whether the allegation is true.

 Verification

NDRFactcheck investigated the alleged claim in The Nation newspaper on 24th March, 2026, and, in response, the spokesperson of INEC, Mr Musa Olurode, confirmed the incident to The Nation, stating that the foreigners, although accompanied by armed personnel, faced strong resistance from residents.

We went further to get the INEC spokesperson to speak with us about the post to ascertain or debunk the occurrence; through a telephone call and text message, Mr Musa Olurode confirmed to NDRFactcheck that there was nothing like such and that INEC staff didn’t register any non-residents.

“Our registration point at Iree has not registered or been involved in registering any non-residents as far as we are concerned. Thank you.”

Response from the INEC spokesperson in Osun State

Attempts to get a reaction from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were futile as the spokesperson of the Osun State command didn’t respond to our enquiries.

Conclusion

Findings did not show that non-residents were being registered in Iree Osun State, as confirmed by INEC.
